2013 SCI Convention Entertainment

By Craig Kauffman

After a long day at the 41st Annual Hunters’ Convention, join us each evening at the Peppermill Resort & Casino for the best line-up of entertainment and keynote speakers.  We are honored to have two great country acts and two keynote speeches from distinguished political figures. In addition, we will offer a variety of special activities where you can hear from celebrated hunting insiders. The entertainment and activities found at The Ultimate Hunters’ Market® are seemingly endless and offer something for everyone. Continue to check www.showsci.org for all of our latest convention updates. Before we know it, January 23 will be here.

Our festivities begin Wednesday evening with a keynote address from former Governor Mike Huckabee. He is the host of HUCKABEE, on the Fox News Channel, and author of nine books. His latest, A Simple Government, is a New York Times bestseller. Plus, Huckabee will speak at the grand opening ceremonies and host his radio show, The Mike Huckabee Show, live from the show floor Wednesday morning. Travis Tritt will follow Huckabee’s Wednesday evening speech with his blend of Southern rock and country. Expect to hear all of his chart toppers like “Country Club,” “I’m Gonna be Somebody,” “Foolish Pride” and “Homesick.”

On Thursday, we will honor our hunting heritage with the Night of the Hunter. This new reception replaces the Thursday night dinner and will feature an array of hors d’oeuvres, carving stations and cocktails set in a festive atmosphere.  An exciting lineup of evening auction hunts and items will lead into the SCI Major Awards program.  This program honors hunters, our hunting heritage and top species taken in the past twenty-four months, as well as recognizes 2012’s hunting accomplishments. The evening will close with a splash of country and comedy from the Bar J Wranglers. The best part is the ticket’s only $25.

Friday evening you will get to hear country music from Montgomery Gentry. Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry both have a commanding stage presence that will make for a fun-filled evening. The duo has a long list of hits that includes: “Something to be Proud of,” “Lucky Man,” “Roll with Me” and “Back When I Knew it All.”

Saturday evening’s gala and auction will feature The Honorable Dick Cheney and Liz Cheney as the keynote speakers. We all know that Dick Cheney is the former Vice President and has many years of business experience, but he is an avid outdoorsman, too. Liz Cheney contributes to FOX News and is the former founder and chairperson of KeepAmericaSafe.com.

We have special guests lined up for the daytime events, too. The Sables are pleased to have Artie Dean Harris return to perform at the Ladies’ Luncheon. Artie’s upbeat and high-octane stage show will have everyone out of their seats dancing in the aisles. Craig Boddington will speak at the Life Member Breakfast. He’s one of the best-known hunters of our times and he will speak about the values of being part of SCI, and Jim Shockey will be a special guest and speaker at our new Hunter Defense Fund Luncheon.

We invite you to join us for The Most Dangerous Game in Town and attend all of our evening and special events. Register now for the 41st Annual Hunters’ Convention.  You’ll save $50 if you buy your three-night dinner package before October 15. Convention is the time to catch up with old friends and plan your next great adventure.  We look forward to seeing in Reno!

Waterfowl Breakfast Sausage Kits

Spicy_maple_apple_gamebird_sausageFor many waterfowlers and turkey hunters, the excitement of the hunt quickly fades the moment they begin breasting out their quarry as familiar thoughts rush in. “Now I have to figure out how to cook these gamy things.”  Hi Mountain Seasonings has come to the rescue with a quick, easy and delicious solution to hard-to-prepare birds with the introduction of its new Breakfast Sausage Seasoning For Game Birds and Poultry.

With dehydrated apple pieces and natural maple flavoring, the new Spicy Apple Maple Blend delivers a unique flavor and texture to your breakfast plate. Now the excitement of the hunt can extend from the field to the breakfast table.

“Bird hunters have been blown away by the superb flavor and tenderness of our waterfowl and turkey jerky cure and seasoning kits, and they’ve been hounding us for even more ways to easily prepare their game birds,” said Hans Hummel, Hi Mountain president. “Breakfast sausage was the logical place to start. We borrowed the dehydrated apple pieces from our line of recently introduced Camping Meals, added natural maple flavor and combined them with our secret blend of seasonings for a savory and sweet breakfast sausage that’s easy to make and just can’t be beat.”

Ideal for use with any game birds or domestic poultry, the kit comes fully equipped with collagen casings, seasonings and dehydrated apples for 22 lbs. of meat. It is recommended to add a little pork or fat to the recipe when using very lean birds.

Youth Dove Hunt A Success

The Third Annual Sequatchie County Youth Hunters Association Dove Shoot, co-sponsored by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency  and  Chattanooga Chapter SCI, was held in at the Tommy Austin Farm in Dunlap, TN, on September 2. There were more than 60 kids age 16 and younger at the annual event which saw many of the young shooters bagging a limit of 15 birds. After the shoot, music was provided by two different groups while those present dined on catfish and hushpuppies. Later in the evening, many prizes were given away along with the SCI-sponsored youth model 20-gauge shotgun.

Hard-To-Find Brass Is Back

Jamison-Brass
In addition to African game cases, Captech International has other unique, obsolete and hard-to-find cases.

If you have a rifle in an obscure African game caliber and can’t find ammunition, there may be hope in finding new brass that can be handloaded. Brass cartridge case manufacturer Jamison International has been reconstituted as a Division of Captech International. This high quality manufacturer of unique, obsolete and hard to find brass cartridge cases, as well as military, hunting and African game calibers, has moved its operations to new facilities totaling 31,000 square feet in Rapid City, South Dakota. Marc Jamison oversees operational control assuring the stringent quality standards of the past will remain intact moving forward. The new facility also offers ample room for an ongoing program of expansion and machine refurbishment to reduce the cycles between production runs of many hard-to-find cartridge cases.

The company is now accepting orders on all of the previously produced calibers as well as their basic brass line for forming. This is an exciting time for handloaders who have been without access to many of the cartridge cases that have been difficult or impossible to find. “Many unique cases are currently available in stock and more are in production each week,” said a company spokesperson.
