The Alaska Department of Fish & Game will offer a first of its kind hunt exclusively for Purple Heart recipients who are 100% disabled. The Purple Heart Hunt is a perfect complement to the State of Alaska’s 2013 Purple Heart Initiative.
The Purple Heart Hunt will be available for the 2015 season and wil allow six medal recipients to hunt the Delta Junction Management Area. Fort Greely, Directorate of Public Works Natural Resources Manager, Richard Barth, was instrumental in the development of this hunt along with Alaska Department of Fish and Game Local Area Biologist, Darren Bruning. Over two years in development, Barth took the time to solicit congressional backing. Letters to state and federal senators, congressman and the Alaska Governor’s Office requesting support for this hunt were well received and supported by all. “The biggest hurdle we had was convincing the local area advisory committee, but in the end we strengthened community relations and were able to get everyone on the same team – supporting our disabled veterans,” said Barth.
