What a fishing event! Sparks Marina was the site of Free Fishing Derby, sponsored by the Northern Nevada Chapter of Safari Club International (NNSCI), the Sparks Rotary Group, Nevada Bighorns Unlimited (NBU), and the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW). On June 9, 2012, a clear, sunny day, 2,020 young anglers registered and participated in the annual Free Fishing Derby. Many of those youngsters had never been fishing. The young anglers and their parents look forward to this annual event as valuable time to share a wonderful experience as a family. What seemed like thousands of fish were stocked; what seemed like hundreds of fish were caught. The kids were beaming and so proud, holding up their stringers with their catch of fish. Everyone had a wonderful time at this morning fishing adventure.
In addition to fishing, there were many other activities in which the youngsters could participate, and educational booths to visit. The highlight of the morning was the gift of hundreds of orange SCI T-shirts, which the NNSCI Chapter gave to participants. What a tremendous sight it was to see a crowd of young, happy kids fishing in their bright orange SCI T-shirts.– Terrance Melby, Chapter Director
